The Tenth Dimension
Ever wonder how many dimensions exist? Ever read the wonderful book “Flatland: A romance of many dimensions” by Edwin Abbot?
This animation presents clearly and consicely the theory of Ten Dimensions, which is (to my best understanding) at the basis of String theory and M-theory. It is actually not very relevant to this blog, except that it shows how a simple logic stream can give beautiful and unexpected results.

Rather than clutter up Alon’s blog space with comments which do not necessarily address the issue at hand, I thought I would place my comment here. About the Israeli-Palestinian matter, about which you seem to be particularly exercised, have you ever thought that for many of us, it is no longer a question of who is right or whose rights are being ignored but whether the situation is at all sustainable given the reality on the ground?
That it is not a matter of anti-Semitism or anti-Islamism but that of end of conflict?
I am not sure what the answer is in this case just as I do not know when the Kashmir problem will be solved to the satisfaction of all parties on the Indian sub-continent. To that end, I wrote a piece some time ago half in jest but mostly in despair. I invite you to read the article with an open mind. Perhaps when reason, mutual trust and diplomacy fail, one will some day have to resort to innovative thought. But I know that I dream.

Actually, I find this much more off-topic then answering where the topic at hand is the topic of the comment, but maybe thats just me 😛

Of course, this is what most of us including myself believe – that a solution needs to be found, and that people will live peacefully. This is exactly why I reply to Alon when he writes anti-Israeli propaganda in his blog. I simply reply his wrong facts and radical suggestions with correct facts and moderate suggestions.

Conflicts are in the nature of humans, that’s the way we’re wired. Modern western society tunnels these emotions into sports, films and computer games, but its still doesn’t prevent conflicts in the world (mostly not in the third world countries such as the Muslim’s). When two groups of people both claim ownership to the same piece of land, there isn’t much you can do to resolve it without having at least one side (usually both) ending up angry.
Re your post:
1. I don’t think the I/P conflict is based in religion. The Jewish claims for the entire lands of the ancient kingdoms are not biblical, but rather historical (i.e. recorded, agreed upon history – not mythical stories in the bible). Turkey is a Muslim country and is an ally of Israel, and Jordan (also mostly Muslim) has signed a peace treaty with Israel and renounced their rights over eastern Jerusalem (which they held for dozens of years) – meaning its not a fundamental Muslim claim in the Palestinian claims over the temple mount.
2. There is no denying that the creation of Israel is rooted in an unjust act (like that of the US) – that of uprooting an existing population to make room for a new one.
“there is no denying”? It is often that people are wrong exactly where they are most certain of themselves.
The existing population was not uprooted.
The Jews who came to populate the land bought it with full pay, or settled in wastelands that belonged to no man. The land was a small uninteresting part of the Ottoman empire. Only when the UN declared the state of Israel, and it was attacked by the neighboring Arabs, did any displacement occur (mostly by Arabs who either participated in the war against Israel, or ran away). It was not an aggressive conquest as you have in northern Ireland, the US or Okinawa.
India should step forward and offer Kashmir to the Israelis.
So what you are basically suggesting is to destroy an existing country and uproot millions people from their homes into a different disputed land? You just wrote a paragraph above that it was unjust to uproot half a million people (which again I remind you, is something that is not Israel’s doing), and now you suggest to do this as a solution to 7 million?
I don’t think any side will ever agree to this: Not India, not Pakistan, and certainly not the Israelis.
Also, if such a solution is formed, it would be much simpler to move 2 million Palestinians who live in refugee camps into Kashmir. Since the Palestinians never had sovereignty over any land, they will probably be happier to accept this then the Israelis who have built a prosperous nation.
